Taichung is a top weekend destination for many: convenient transport plus recent rapid development have attracted many fashion and dining brands to open there, boosting tourism. Taichung has also embraced the “slow life” concept in recent years — for example, the Chin Mei group's latest PARK2 Ciwuguangchang blends outdoor living with a city slow-life attitude, creating a new metropolitan-park-style cultural and aesthetic hub.

Like Taipei, Taichung is a fast-paced big city but also has many arts and cultural venues where you can relax and recharge. These spots are not only weekend gathering places for locals but also great options for short, easy trips for out-of-town visitors.

PARK2 CiwuguangchangDubbed an “atypical adult park,” it centers on “park,” “shops,” and “arts & lifestyle.” From architecture, landscaping, and visual design to shop design and art installations, nature and culture are blended throughout. Besides various curated shops, cafés, international restaurants, and trendy bars, it regularly hosts markets and runs outdoor DJ performances and niche gatherings. By day it feels like an outdoor art exhibition; by night it’s like an outdoor bar in a city oasis.

PARK2 Caowu Plaza is very conveniently located, close to the Green Parkway, the National Museum of Natural Science, and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. It's also easy to get to Audit Village, the Green Light Project, and the Gongyi Road dining district, making it an ideal spot to relax on a weekend.

National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts

The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in Taichung is currently the only national-level art museum in Taiwan, focusing on visual arts and devoted to the collection, research, and exhibition of Taiwanese modern and contemporary art. Main exhibition spaces include 15 galleries, "Art Street," "U-108 Space: 5G Immersive Technology Application Experimental Field," and the "Floating Island City VR Gallery," as well as an outdoor area displaying several classic sculptures. The museum also features a children's picture book area and various learning and leisure spaces, making it one of the largest art museums in Asia.

National Taichung Theater

Designed by Japanese architect Toyo ItoNational Taichung Theaterit has long been a must-visit for photography enthusiasts. Its unique acoustic tunnel and curved wall forms present two distinct moods by day and by night. At the time of construction it was hailed as "the world's most difficult building to construct" and one of the "nine architectural wonders of the world," and Toyo Ito regarded it as his "lifelong masterpiece."

The interior of the National Taichung Theater contains three professional theaters and a multipurpose space called the "Corner Salon," plus an outdoor plaza, an outdoor theater, and a rooftop sky garden—making every part of the building, from inside out and ground to roof, a stage full of charm. There are also restaurants, cafes, an outdoor cinema, and a curated shop, so you can easily spend an entire day here even without attending a performance.

ZASSO

「ZASSOIt serves as both an exhibition space and a curated shop; stepping inside gives a calm, understated feeling. The minimalist interior has a Japanese-inspired simplicity. The second-floor gallery holds periodic photography and craft exhibitions and organizes handmade tableware workshops. Accompanied by music, it’s a charming space that lets visitors fully unwind.

Rich Art Gallery

「Rich Art GalleryIt is dedicated to promoting contemporary art. In addition to regularly hosting artists’ creative presentations at the gallery, it actively participates in international exhibitions and opened a second venue in 2020. The indoor and outdoor space totals 275 ping, combining specialty coffee and diverse exhibition formats. About 20 permanent exhibition walls display works by more than 10 well-known domestic and international artists, and the mixed-use space offers art lovers a comfortable viewing experience.

River Art Gallery

Address: No. 281, Daye Road, Nantun District, Taichung City

「River Art GalleryOne of Taichung’s long-established galleries, it helped discover Taiwanese artists Li Zhen and Hung Yi early in their careers. In 2021 the gallery transformed into a new contemporary exhibition space without restrictions on theme, form, or medium, representing long-term emerging artists from home and abroad with unique styles and strong potential. Recently it held the “Graffiti Social Club” special exhibition with domestic and international graffiti artists, showcasing a different take on street art.
